Shoebox charity marks 20th anniversary
Operation Christmas Child sent its first boxes to children living in Romanian orphanages after the collapse of the Ceausescu regime in 1990.
Two decades later the project, run by Christian relief organisation Samaritan’s Purse, covers Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Africa.

He said: “Sadly, many tens of thousands of children are living in very challenging situations today, and the kindness of those who donate a gift-filled shoebox is every bit as important now as it was in 1990.
“It may be hard to imagine what a difference a shoebox containing a few simple toys and gifts makes to a child, but if you think that, for many, this is the first time they will receive any present at Christmas, it helps people understand.”
